His mother’s name was Isabelle, his father was Tristan. They were both happy people, both very much in love with one another. Their flat was on the edge of the Capillaries, close to the Expanse, it offered actual windows in the south wall. Young Paul would spend hours between online lessons just staring at the streaming people, in and out, in and out, never ceasing in motion save for the New or at least the out of the ordinary.

The skylight was blue. A few errant clouds streamed by the perimeter horizon far, far away. Business suites towered behind him. He bent forward, hands on knees and breathed deeply, in and out. The perfectly humid regular air of the Expanse filled his lungs. This was Safe. This was Normal. This was Good.

A vacant face in the mirror looked back at him. “For the love of all that’s holy,” he said to the image, “You’re not looking too good, my man.” His face was haggard, eyes popping out in dismay. He looked at his coveralls. Their shaggy pleats were going to need some touch up work soon. That meant finding some cred and a tailor program that would stitch up something durable enough to last on his threadbare budget.

Paul could feel his sweat starting to evaporate. If that was happening, it meant his disguise was fuming into air as well. He had very little time to get out of the arteries the Detective was plowing through. He looked desperately for some place of salvation. The buildings in the business district of the Expanse were like forced bubbles with cylindrical bottoms. Various doors and windows of transparent spongiform glistened in the skylight, style shops with a trickle of customers at this hour, none of which seemed too appealing for a fellow that was about to transform into something else.

Through the hole in the casino wall went the Detective, followed by Paul and four officers. The detective flashed her spectacles at the building’s superintendent and the group of six were ushered into a quite backroom.

She is tall, just over six feet, with mouse brown hair swept back into a tight bun. Her piercing green eyes use her full pouting lips to their distracting advantage. She would be beautiful if she wasn’t so severe. The robes and spectacles of her office do not detract from this.

Paul was running full speed now, a, something he hadn't done since he was a younger man, since the Games during school, and he was pleased with himself how well he was doing, nearly catching up with the boy. His trex was primed, ready for vid capture.

And Paul went about his way, avoiding eddies, shuffling just so to keep in the main flow and was soon rewarded with a burst into the openness of the Public Expanse.

Air. Light. Space. It didn’t matter that it was filled with half a million souls all trying to get out of it as soon as they entered. Walking the Expanse was the sanest part of Paul’s day-to-day ritual.

Paul heaved a sigh as he stepped next to the apartment’s doorway. “You can do this” he breathed out loud. “Easy stuff just open the door and go.” He felt the weight of the trex and realized that his hands didn’t want to touch it to the door pad.

It’s the dreams that get him the most. Dreams of ex lovers , dreams of his parents before their retirement. Dreams of things that don’t involve the trex. Most of all, though, is the shear amounts of space involved. He is standing and his feet are bare and strangely enough, so is the rest of him.
